Do you suspect grubs in your lawn? If you see signs of damage from grub worms, otherwise known as beetle larvae, you’re smart to be looking for “grub control near me” —and fast! There are several ways to identify whether or not the damage in your lawn is due to those nasty grub worms. Before we jump into how you might be able to self-diagnose your lawn’s issue, let’s learn just a little bit more about grub worms and grub control options!

Grub Control

There are many reasons why your lawn may require grub control services. First of all, let’s check out the culprits for these problems.

Grub worms are the larvae of beetles. For us Texans, we all know the annoying adult version of grub worms when they are flying around our porch lights all summer! That’s right, you guessed it: grub worms grow up to be June Bugs. Gross! Here’s how the cycle works and why grub control could be an excellent answer for your lawn.

First, at the start of summer, adult June Bugs emerge. Female June Bugs start to burrow underground in your lawn and prepare to lay their eggs. The eggs hatch beneath your turf grass, and the larvae begin to feed in the soil. This is what wreaks havoc on your lawn’s root system and turf grass!

When to Apply Grub Control

There are different types of grub control that should be applied at different times. For example, if you identify grub worms currently beneath your turf, you may choose to apply a grub control curative. This product will kill the grubs on contact. However, the problem with using a grub control curative as your only form of grub control is that the damage has already occurred by the time you can identify the problem and treat your lawn for grubs. You don’t want that every year! The best way to control grubs is to hire a professional lawn care team like ours at Weedex Lawn Care to apply a preventative treatment before your yard even shows the slightest sign of grub damage!

At Weedex, our grub prevention treatment is applied in late spring and is guaranteed for the ENTIRE year. You can rest easy that no damaging tiny larva will be chowing down on all the nutrients in your soil. We take season-long grub control to the next level!

What is Grub Control?

As we now know, grub control prevents future grubs or kills current grubs that are burrowing beneath your lawn. When you hire a lawn care company such as Weedex Lawn Care, a good Turf Route Manager will diagnose problems in your yard that may otherwise go unnoticed or be misdiagnosed. When you are on the lookout for all different types of lawn issues, such as lawn fungus, insect damage, drought damage, and weeds, it can be tricky not to get them mixed up or confused for one another!

Let us help you ensure that your lawn gets the best treatments possible. At Weedex, our specialists can diagnose any and every problem you may find in your lawn, and give it the perfect treatment to help it survive and thrive.

To the untrained eye, many lawn issues can look virtually the same. For example, if you see brown patches in your turf grass, it could be damage from drought and lack of water, or a lawn fungus caused by too much water! A bit tricky, isn’t it?

Let’s go over a few of the things that could be causing the damage in your lawn.

It could be a brown patch, take-all root rot, or another lawn fungus. If you suspect these, you must select a lawn fungicide and other remedies to treat the problem.

It could also be drought! In the hot, dry months of the Texas summer, many lawns get a little bit fried. If your lawn looks a bit brown and crispy in the hot months, it could be due to a lack of proper water. Your irrigation system may not be covering your yard properly or you may have a broken sprinkler head. It is always a good idea to test your system before the growing season starts to make sure everything is working correctly.

However, if your lawn is getting the proper amount of water for the type of turfgrass you have, the cause of your brown, patchy lawn could in fact, be grub worms! It’s a bummer to find grub damage in your lawn, since the signs of damage don’t show up until it’s too late. However, if you do find damage due to grub worms, you must treat your lawn immediately to prevent even more damage from occurring.

Grubs in Lawn

Want a little bit of help diagnosing grub worms in your lawn yourself? While it’s best to get a professional opinion, there are some ways that you can check out your lawn yourself to see if you can figure out precisely what is going on out there. Here are a few top tips for identifying grub worms in your lawn!

Signs of Grubs in Lawn

1. Discoloration in the Turf Grass

If you are seeing brown or grey colored turf grass in your lawn, this could be a sign of grub worms lurking beneath the surface! There can be many causes of discoloration in turfgrass things, such as lack of water, but when coupled with another item or two on this list, it can be an easy indicator of grubs. Be on the lookout for grass that lacks its usual green color, as well as any bounce back and life to it. It might look stomped on, flat, and lifeless. Not exactly the look you are going for with your landscaping, we assume!

These steps are needed to fix the grub problem and help your lawn get greener again. First, identify the grubs and treat them with a contact grub control curative to take care of the current grubs. However, don’t stop there! Let’s get your lawn prepped for a better summer and fall next year by signing up for a treatment program that will prevent grubs from returning. Weedex can help you with that!

2. Armadillo Rooting

Armadillos love grub worms! If you see signs of armadillos rooting around in your lawn, they could be on the hunt for grubs. Look for overturned clumps of turf, holes, and aeration in the lawn, and anything that looks like a little snout is rummaging through. It could be a nine-banded armadillo, one of the eight official state animals of Texas, having its daily lunch in your lawn!

3. Soft Soil

Soft soil is another easy way to spot potential grub worms in your lawn! This is a pretty easy thing to check for. Take a walk around your lawn, feeling the firmness of the ground with your steps. If you are walking across your lawn, and the ground feels firm, compact, and dense but suddenly starts to feel squishy or soft underfoot, that could a sign that grubs are eating away at your turfgrass root system! The aeration caused by the beetle larva will weaken the soil and roots, causing a soft feeling underfoot. If you notice this condition in your lawn, try the next step to test it for grub worms even further!

4. 3 to 6 Grubs Per Square Foot

This one is a dead giveaway. Luckily, looking for grub worms in a damaged lawn is pretty easy! The damaged turfgrass is much easier to peel back. Tugging on the turfgrass is another way a Turf Route Manager can check for grub worm damage! If the grass pulls out a little too easily, the lawn could be harboring grubs. This method comes in handy when trying to search for the grub worms beneath your lawn!

When grub worms damage your lawn, it can usually be peeled back like a carpet. Peel the turf backward until the soil is exposed, and start searching for little pesky grubs. They will appear milky white and look like little worm creatures— not full-grown beetles yet. You have a grub worm issue if you see 3 to 6 grubs per square foot of your lawn! It’s time to apply a treatment to kill these grubs and look into a good grub prevention program for your lawn.

Grub Control for Lawns

Lawn grub control is essential for keeping a green, healthy lawn! When should you apply grub control? Grubs are pesky little critters who wreak havoc on our lawns in the late summer. The damage usually shows up around July to October, before the grubs burrow beneath the freeze line and after they’ve had time to hatch and begin feeding. Aside from the fact that grub worms are not an appealing part of any lawn (they are a little gross to look at!), they cause extreme damage to our lawns.

Now that we know what grub worms are and a couple of options to treat and prevent them from infiltrating your lawn let’s look at what Weedex can do to help!
