Lawn mower cutting the lawn Mow weekly during summer monthsHaving a lush, green summer lawn requires hard work. Along with watering and fertilization, you need to mow every week. As detailed in our previous lawn tip, mowing less often will remove more than 1/3 of the leaf blade and damage the grass.
If you hire out your lawn mowing service, they may be cutting your grass too short. Prevent damage by making sure they adjust their lawn mower.
Here are the correct mowing heights for summer:
- Bermuda and Zoysia – 1.5 to 2 inches tall
- St. Augustine – 2.5 to 3 inches tall
- Fescue and Rye – 3 inches
Cutting the grass too short can:
- Shock the plant, causing excessive graying or browning of the leaf tips
- Greatly reduce its ability for photosynthesis, thus, depleting root reserves
- Provide environmental conditions for disease, organisms, and insects if excessive clippings remain on the lawn
And always keep the blade on the lawn mower sharp to avoid damaging the grass. Less damage to your grass means your lawn can be greener and healthier.
Remember to give your lawn at least 1 to 1.5 inches of water every week to stay healthy. You can still give your lawn the appropriate amount of water, even when faced with water restrictions. Check our recommended watering guide for North Texas lawns. Send us your comments and feedback!
